3 Tips to Match Your Rug Style to Your Interior Design Style
Nothing really ties a room together quite like the perfect area rug. Whether you’re looking to add a little warmth to your hardwood floors or simply need a pop of color on top of your carpet, rugs are a must-have when redesigning your living spaces. But, with so many different styles, designs, and sizes to choose from, it can be hard to know which rug style is perfect for your space — and how to style it. At Tumble, we believe in working smarter, not harder, so we’ve simplified the rug decision-making and styling process to only three steps:
Choosing Your Size
The most important thing to remember when styling a rug is to make sure you choose the right size. A rug that’s too large will overwhelm your space, but one that’s too small may not make the statement you’re hoping for. Because of this, Tumble offers four different area rug sizes and two runner sizes, so you’re guaranteed to find the perfect fit for you.
Best for: Filling large spaces with minimal room on the edges. This size rug can be used in bedrooms and living rooms if you want the rug to fit comfortably underneath the entirety of the bed or sofas with about two feet of space on either side. It can also be used in dining rooms if you have a dining table with six to eight chairs and if you’re looking for a rug that extends beyond the backs of the chairs.
6x9’
Best for: Filling the majority of a space while still leaving some of the floor slightly exposed. This size rug can be used in a bedroom or living room if you only want it to fit partially under the bed and sofas. It can also be used in a smaller dining room that has six or less chairs and if you want to leave more floor space on either side of the rug exposed.
5x7’
Best for: Filling only a portion of the space, with more of the flooring underneath exposed. This size rug can be used in a bedroom at the very foot of the bed or in a living room under a coffee table or in front of a fireplace. It can also be used in a kitchen with an open floor plan.
3x5’
Best for: Filling a small portion of the space, or being used as a dual set. This size rug can be used next to any sized bed, on one or both sides. It can also be used in a small mudroom or entryway, or in a kitchen in front of the sink or stove.
Runners
Best for: Filling a long, narrow space of flooring. Runners are ideal for narrow apartment kitchens and long hallways. Offered in two sizes (seven and ten feet), runners add depth and elevate even the narrowest of spaces.
Complimenting Your Style

With five different design collections to choose from, there is a Tumble to compliment everyone’s style, and we’ve broken down which styles we think pair best with certain design tastes.

Staging Your Space
After you’ve chosen your rug style and size, it’s important to know how to stage the space that it’s in. Because of the unique spill proof material, Tumble removes the question of if a space is consistently clean enough to actually house a beautiful rug. Our washable rugs can be used in any room of the home, including highly trafficked areas like mudrooms and creatively messy spaces like kitchens.
The most important thing to remember when adding your rug to a room is to make sure it works in conjunction with the room’s furniture. Your rug should anchor your furnishings rather than draw attention away from them. A simple way to remember this is to follow the idea of aligning the long edge of the rug with the longest piece of furniture in the room — in a bedroom, this will be the bed; in a living room, it will be the couch. It’s also important to remember to have at least some part of your furniture overlapping with the rug. Whether it’s the front legs of the couch, the dining room table, or the bed frame, having at least a portion of your furniture overlapping with the rug ensures the space looks cohesive and tied together!
